At first Mary was afraid but the angel told her there was nothing to fear. He said that she was going to have a child, who was conceived through the Holy Spirit and Mary would named the child Jesus. The angle claimed that this child would save the people of the world from their sins. When Mary heard this she was amazed by the power of God and the gift which he had given her.

When Mary's husband heard the news he presumed that Mary had been unfaithful to him and he knew Mary was a virgin. He decided that he must break the marriage and leave Mary for what she had done. However that night in a dream a angel visited Joseph in his sleep and explained that the child was in fact Gods own son. Joseph had faith in God and married Mary, talking in Jesus as his own.

Not long before Mary was due the emperor Augustus ordered everyone to register. Joseph had to go to Bethlehem, so he loaded his donkey and traveled their with Mary. When they arrive all the inns were full so the couple were forced to rest in a stable. That night Mary gave birth to Jesus She wrapped the newborn baby in swaddling cloth and lay him in a manger of hay.

Three wise men were following a star that would lead them to the long awaited saviour. During their journey they stopped and told of their journey to King Herod, who asked the wise men to bring him back news of the baby boy once they had seen it. The three wise men continued on their travels until the found the stable where Jesus way laying. They gave him gifts of Gold, Frankenstein and Myrrh, to acknowledge him as the one which they had been searching for. Then they continued back home, purposefully avoiding King Herod, for they had been told in a dream not to tell him about the baby Jesus.

In a nearby paddock Shepard were watching their flocks through the night when suddenly angels appeared in the sky. At first the Shepards were afraid but the angels said that there was no need to be. They told the men of a the baby Jesus, and that he could be found lying in a manger. When they heard this the Shepards set off to visit the newborn baby.

Meanwhile King Herod realised that the three wise men had tricked him and ordered all the male babies under the age of two to be killed. Joseph was warned that they were in danger by an angel in a dream and he fled with Mary and Jesus to Egypt. Shortly afterward Herod died, and so they returned back to live in the city of Nazareth.

THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY OF JESUS BEGINS

John the Baptists was a preacher who spread the word of God in the Judean desert. One day Jesus went into the desert and asked John to be baptised. John was amazed that Jesus would ask such a thing of him and protested that Jesus should be doing the baptism, not the other way around. After some persuasion Jesus convinced John to baptise him. Jesus was baptised in the River Jordan by John and this began his ministry.

Once he had been been baptised Jesus went into the desert where he fasted for forty days. While he was there the devil came a tried to tempt Jesus into asking God to do things for him. Jesus said no to all of the devils requests, saying that he would only ever serve God.

This was the beginning to Jesus' journey as a spiritual leader.

HIS LIFE

Throughout his life Jesus preached to many people and performed miracles for the people who he met.

He is renown for helping people who were rejected by society. Some of these people included lepers, who were rejected by the church, the poor, slaves and women. He taught the word of God to the people and encouraged them to tell God that they were sorry for their sins and be baptised.

The lessons which he taught were simple and involved everyday people that the crowds were able to relate. Inside these basic stories however were profound spiritual truths that encouraged peace and equality between all people.

To those in need he said
‘I am the door; by me, if any man enter in he shall be saved.’
John 10:9

It was by doing this that he managed to covet thousands of people.

DEATH OF JESUS

Although Jesus had many followers and people that loved him his teaching opposed what religious leaders of the time preached. Because of this he was disliked in the church and many of the priests felt threatened by Jesus. As a result they decided that they would arrest him and accuse Jesus that he was encouraging revolt among the people.

One evening Jesus and his twelve disciples were in a garden just outside the walls of Jerusalem called Gethsemane. Suddenly out of the dark there appeared a group of soldiers and religious officials. One of the disciples, Judas, who had been bribed to betray Jesus went over to him and kissed his head, this was a sign to the soldiers of who to arrest. At first the disciples tried to fight back but Jesus said

‘Everyone that uses a sword in anger will die in the same way. Don’t you realise that I could appeal to my Father and he would immediately send his angles to protect me? But if I did that t would be impossible to fulfil the words of the prophesy that says things must happen this way.’
(See Sources and References, Book Three)

The disciples backed away from the soldiers and Jesus was lead away.

Jesus was brought up in front of Pilate to be judged, as he was they only man who could pass the death penalty. However despite the religious leader's claims Pilate was not convinced that Jesus was a threat. He decided to leave it up the to people and asked them to choose between letting Jesus, or a murderer free. The crowd chose the murderer and whatever Judas did to try and change their minds would not do so.

Jesus was beaten and killed on the cross alongside thieves and murderers. After many hours up there he took his last breath and died, saying just before he went,

‘Father, in thy hands I command my spirit.’
Mark 15:37

 Return to Home Page

The Story of Buddha

PREVIOUS LIVES OF BUDDHA

Before his life as Gautama, Buddha live many times in multiple different forms. One of the earliest lives in which he is mentioned is as a young boy named Sumedha. While he was born rich Sumedha gave away his the family fortune that was left to him to become a ascetic. When he met Dipamkara Buddha in this life Dipamkara is told to have seen who Sumedha would become and predicted his future life as a great Buddha with the words

This is one who will be a Buddha. In the future, after four incalculable aeons together with one hundred thousand aeons, be will be Buddha named Gotama. (Book Eighteen)

During the previous lives of Buddha this prediction was made by twenty three elightened Buddha's. These were Kondanna, Sumangala, Sumana, Revata, Sobhita, Anomadassi, Paduma, Narada, Padumuttara, Sumedha, Sujata, Piyadassi, Atthadassi, Dhammadassi, Siddhattha, Tissa, Phussa, Vipassi, Sikhi, Vessabhu, Kakusandha, Konagamana and Kassapa.

In each life Buddha was re-born into he became closer and closer to achieving his goal as a fully enlightened Buddha.

BIRTH OF BUDDHA

One night Buddhas mother had a dream. In it as white elephant came down from the heaven and entered into her womb. In there it placed a white lotus. Buddha's mother understood that the dream meant she had conceived a pure and powerful child who would come down from a previous life in Tushita heaven, the land of Maitreya.

Buddhas parents where the King and Queen of the land so they invited many seers to their palace to predict the life of Buddha. They predicted that he would either become a great king or a fully enlightened Buddha.

As it was the custom, not long before the Queen was due she began her journey to her parents house to give birth to the child. While on the way there she began to feel tired so she stopped to rest in a small grove of trees. It was here that she gave birth to Buddha. During birth the Queen did not experience pain, but instead had a pure vision in which she stood and held branch of tree with one hand while gods Brahma and Indra took baby from her side.

The King and Queen named the child Siddharthat Gautama, meaning 'one whose goal is acomplishable'

THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY OF BUDDHA BEGINS

When Buddha was about 12 a seer told the King that if Gautama ever saw old age, sickness, death or recluse then he would leave the palace and become an ascetic. The King wanted his son to follow in he foot steps so he did not let his son enter the city and got rid of all signs that would cause his son to leave from the palace.

As Gautama grew older he began to wounder about what was beyond the palace walls and decided to go out and explore the city. His father ordered that all signs of old age, sickness, death or recluse should be removed from his sight while in the city. However on the first day the prince saw old wrinkled man, On the second he saw someone suffering from an incurable disease and on the third he saw a funeral procession. Not long after that the prince also met an ascetic, who told him about his life. The prince was determined to become an ascetic too, and nothing that the King could do would convince his son to stay.

Gautama traveled long distances on foot and in his quest to find somewhere to attain enlightenment. On his way he begged for food. Once he found the perfect place to achieve enlightenment he stopped traveling and meditated for six years. Once he realised that he was very close to enlightenment he left the forest where he was meditating and traveled to Gaya where he sat under the Bodhi tree and vowed that

'I will not rise from this posture as long as my mind is not freed from the cankers without any reminder'
(Source Eighteen)

As dusk fell the chief of all daemons Devaputra Mara appeared and he conjured many fantasies to try and distract Gautama. Gautama ignored everything and concentrated even harder in achieving his goal. As the sun rose Gautama reached enlightenment and became a Buddha. Buddha stayed in the same position for the next seven weeks looking at the world from his new perspective. In the eight week the gods spoke to Buddha and instructed him to go out into the world and teach the people of the world. This began Buddhas spiritual journey as one who is enlightened.

HIS LIFE

Buddha spent his life traveling around India educating others about how to atain elightenment. Through his teachings he allowed thousands of people to become enlightened buddhas in future lives. He also peformed many miricles. He lessons were open to anyone who would listen, whatever age, race or gender. Stories remain today of him conversing with beggars on the streets and Kings that ruled huge areas of land, looking upon each of them as equals. It is this openess that meant so many people would turn to Buddhism, both during his life and in generations which would follow.

DEATH OF BUDDHA

Buddha lived for over 80 years and died peacfully as an old man from natural causes. Lying on his side between two sal trees Buddha began meditating and prepairing to complete the last stage of his existance. Surrounding him were his disciples and monks who he addressed just before his death, finishing with his last words

'All things composed are perishable. Now strive diligently'
(Source Six)

Buddha's body was cremated and distributed at multiple locations, in domed shaped funerary mounds named Stupas. Mary came over and told her son what had happened but Jesus did not see what the situation had to do with him. Despite what Jesus said Mary got the attention of some servants and directed them to Jesus, telling them to do whatever he said. A servant came over to Jesus and told him what they had been told. Jesus looked at his mother and then told them to fill up six water jugs that were placed at the side of the room. When they did this Jesus told them to give a glass of it to the Master of the wedding which a servant did. When he tasted it he was amazed that it was very good quality wine and he congratulated the groom on his choice. He was impressed that the best wine had been left till last, when usually it was drunk first.

JESUS CALMS THE STORM
Matthew 8, Mark 4, Luke 8

Jesus and his disciples had just finished a busy day preaching to the crowds and Jesus suggested that they take a boat out across the lake. The disciples agreed and they were soon on their way out. While they were sailing Jesus fell asleep. Meanwhile as the disciples sailed on the wind and waves were getting violent. As the waved crashed into the boat and threatened to sink it the disciples got more and more afraid and decided to wake Jesus. When Jesus woke up he was surprised at the panic of his disciples and so he stood at the front of the boat and yelled out into the wind for it to be still. Immediately everything was still. Jesus was puzzled and turned around to the disciples. He asked them where was their faith in God to protect them. The disciples were amazed with what they had seen and marveled and the fact that Jesus could control the wind and waves.

JESUS FEEDS THE HUNGRY CROWDS
Matthew 14, Mark 6, Luke 9, John 6

After going out by themselves to spread the word of God the disciples were excited to tell Jesus what they had done in their travels. As they were tired and had not eaten Jesus suggested that they go to a quiet stop away from the crowds to talk, and so they set off. Yet as they walked the crowds followed them too and so when they got to their quite destinations it was busy with hundreds of people. Jesus felt sorry for the people so he began to teach them. The disciples saw that it was getting late and suggested that they send the people off to their villages to eat and rest. Jesus asked why they could not feed the people, but the disciples were disbelieving and said that they would never have enough food for so many people. Andrew, Peter's brother found a young boy with two fish and five loafs of barley bread. Jesus took the food and prayed to God. Then he took the food and broke it into pieces handing it out around the crowd and urging the disciples to do the same. This meant that every person was able to have enough food, and then at the end there was twelve whole baskets of leftover food.

THE GOOD SAMARITAN
Luke 10

A teacher of law asked Jesus what someone would have to do to have an eternal life. Jesus asked what the law said and he replied that one had to love the Lord and neighbour, to which Jesus agreed. But the lawyer wanted to know who was his neighbour, and he asked Jesus this question. Jesus replied with a story.

Once upon a time a man way traveling along a road when he was attacked, robbed and beaten by criminals. The man was left for dead. Later a priest came by, but he just crossed over the other side of the road and ignored the man. Then a Levite came along and did the same. After that a Samaritan came along and saw the man. He felt sorry for the poor battered body so he bandaged him up and lead him away on the Samaritan's donkey to an inn. The next day he had to leave but before he went he gave the inn keeper some money for the injured man's lodging and said he would pay any extras when he returned.

Jesus asked the lawyer who was the neighbour and the lawyer replied that it was the man who showed kindness. Jesus told the lawyer he should go out into the world and do the same.

 Return to Home Page

Who was Jesus

Jesus is one of the most famous religious figures remembered in history and is acknowledged in multiple religions as a spiritual leader. He is written about in several religious scripts, the New Testament focusing almost souly on his life and teaching.

WHAT IS KNOWN HISTORICALLY ABOUT JESUS?

Historically there is little concrete evidence that can be discovered about him. He was born in Bethlehem during the year of 4BC, and died 34 years later in 30AD. Shortly after his death there is records of a huge group of people preaching about his life. At this groups head there were 12 leaders who said that the Jesus they spoke of was the Messiah of Israel. They also claimed that he had risen from the dead, and used this story to spread the word of their religion.

This remains the only information which can be historically proven about Jesus. The Story of Jesus however does provide a detailed account of his birth, spiritual leadership, lessons and death.

 Return to Home Page

Stories, Miracles and Lessons about Buddha

THE FOUR NOBEL TRUTHS

The Four Nobel Truths were an major part of the teaching of Buddha, that helped many people to become enlightened in later lives.

The First Nobel Truth

This First Nobel truth is the Truth of Dukha. Buddha taught that everything was Dukha including all experiences whether pleasant or painful in nature. Included in the Dukha were many of the factors which Buddha strove to eliminate from people's lives. Some of these being birth, ageing, death, parting, unfulfilled desires and decay. It is the Dukha which is throughout the universe and it effects everything.

The Second Nobel Truth

The Second Nobel truth is the origin of the Dukha. Buddha taught that the Dukha arises as a result of sensual pleasures which revolve in a continuous circle. He believed that craving or greed arise from feeling which arises from sense-contact, which arises from six senses, which arises from mind and form, which arises from consciousness, which arises from formations, which arises from ignorance, which arises from suffering, which arises from birth, which arises from becoming, which arises from grasping, which arises from craving. So beings remain trapped in this never ending circle.

The Third Nobel Truth

The Third Nobel truth is the truth of Cessation, or ceasing, of the Duhkha. This states that there is a final stage to the Duhkha were everything is 'blown out' including greed, hate and delusion. This only can occur however when the individual stops craving and gets themselves out of the endless cycle. It is here that birth and death are abandoned.

The Fourth Nobel Truth

The final and Fourth Nobel truth, is the truth of the Eightfold Path. This is simply the factors that lead to the ending of the duhka. The factor are having the right speech, action, livelihood, mindfulness, concentration, view.and thought. It is these eight factors which complete the three parts of a Buddha's training of moral conduct, concentration and wisdom.

Medical Analogy

Buddha likened the Four Nobel Truths to a medical analogy

First Nobel Truth - Human condition is diagnosed as being duhkha
Second Nobel Truth - Craving to known the cause of the duhkha
Third Nobel Truth - The condition is diagnosed and recovery is possible
Fourth Nobel Truth - The Eightfold Path is the medicine to cure duhkha

BUDDHA'S TEACHING AND THE RAFT

Buddha likened his teaching to a raft.He told the story of a traveler who is on one side of a river. On his side the bank is dangerous, but he can see that on the other side the area is safe. He builds a raft to and uses it to cross the river. Once he is on the other side the traveler is unsure of what he should do. He asks himself whether he should keep the raft or let go of it.

Buddha says that his teaching is like that raft which should be used for crossing but not clinging to. They should not be used as a creed, but instead as something that is brought into existence that needs to be cultivated.

 Return to Home Page

Sources and References
Here are a list of Sources and References that have been used on this site,

Book One Bowker, John (ed.) Very few historically proven facts are known about Buddha himself as the story of his life and teachings have been passed down by word of mouth since that day by Buddhist monks.

WHAT IS KNOWN HISTORICALLY ABOUT BUDDHA?

It was early estimates place the birth of Buddha around 625BC. Recently however historians have reviewed this estimation, and suggested that a closer guess is around 480BC. His birth place is located just inside the bouder of modern Nepal, in a area called Kapilavastu. Here his father was the King or at least a highly ranked aristocratic family with both wealth and power.

This remains the only information which can be historically proven about Buddha. The Story of Buddha however does provide a detailed acount of his life, passed down thousands of generations to reach us in the preasent day.

 Return to Home Page

Books to Look Out For.

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Related Websites

There is no abstract available for this page revision.
